Termite Problem: The Talbots home and neighborhood was built upon sandy loam soil, which can also be described as termite country. Termites had been a problem for the Talbot’s since they first moved into their home. The wood damaging pests attack every area of the house, from crawl space to attic, in the garage, and even outside around the pool. For 20 years Mrs. Talbot chased termites using home treatments and chemical sprays, but never achieved any success. Pest control companies would perform a liquid chemical treatment only if the Talbots agreed to remove their indoor well; however, this was not a compromise they are willing to make. The Talbots were in search of something that would allow them to maintain their well while simultaneously cure the termite problem.

Termite Problem: The first occurrence of the termites was in the spring of 1999 when they swarmed one of the gymnasiums in search for a place to start a new colony. This swarming became a seasonal event for the following four years. During those years worker termites ate away at the well-kept maple flooring, causing it to become soft and brittle. A liquid chemical treatment was applied to the outside of the gymnasium, but proved to be completely ineffective. Mr. Winchester director of the physical plant did not want to tear up the perimeter of the 1100 ft.² flooring in order to drill holes in the underlying concrete slab. As time progressed and the floor condition worsened Mr. Winchester and the University became more eager to find a remedy for their problem.
Solution: Friends University wisely chose the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System to solve their termite problem. The system was installed in the fall of 2003 and by the winter of that year all the colonies were eliminated. There has not been another swarm since the installation, nor have there been any other live termites foraging upon the flooring. In the fourth year period of activity, the termites caused $5000 worth of damage.
